300mm lens shootout

At 300mm focal length this glass is compared:

  • Pentax DA 55-300mm at 300mm
  • Sigma 50-500 at 300mm
  • Pentax-M 300 F/4 *
  • Asahi Pentax 300mm F/6.3 M42 with PK adapter

At the “open” test the apertures are a bot equalised, the second test is with all of them at F/11
“Open” test:

55-300 300 5.8
50-500 300 6.7
M300 5.6
AP300 6.3

Now at F/11:

55-300 300 11.0
50-500 300 11.0
M300 11.0
AP300 11.0

Conclusions:

  • At the “open” test: best is the Bigma 50-500 (by far!), then 55-300, then M300 and AP300 comes last
  • More closed: best are 55-300 and 50-500, then M300 and AP300 again last
  • Respect for the zoom lenses! I would have thought the M300 star lens to beat all of them!
  • The Asahi Pentax M42 lens is not that good after all…
